Before blogging

A beginner guide for new bloggers

Blogging is a very lucrative activity and you will enjoy it a lot if you like writing.

It does not matter if you are looking to start a personal or business blog, there are some things you should know before starting a blog.

These days people go into blogging for all the wrong reasons and they approach it with the idea,” have to make money now! now! ". Of course!  you will have that in mind, but are you willing to wait or are you going to quit when it does not turn out your way at the beginning.

Many successful bloggers today also had a rough start but that did not discourage them.  In fact, it only pushed them to
accomplish greater things.

It's always better to write about something you are good at. It can be based on acquired knowledge or just simply your everyday life.

That way you would not run out of
original content(which is very important).

Now the things you must know before starting a new blog are as follows:

  • Choose a particular niche that you would like to focus on. For example, you may decide to write on health, technology, photography, science and so on. The more specific the better.
  • Clearly define your long and short-term goals. Draft out the goals you will want to achieve and how you intend to achieve it.
If you have decided to start a new blog, what you need to do..

1) Use a free/custom domain

It is always advisable start with a free domain as a new blogger so you can familiarize yourself with blogging and what it truly entails.

You can get a
free domain website from blogger or word press. Then when you are ready to invest in your website, buy a custom domain name from any of the various sources.

2) Branding

There are millions of blog's out there, so you should create a unique look to yours.

Actions you must take, first choose a responsive
theme that has a certain color your readers would not forget in a hurry.

The design should be simple with easy navigation.

 You can get a
logo for your brand that you can use as favicon, just google "free logo" there are lots of sites the offer free customization of logos.

3) Long content is key

This is still working in 2017. The longer your content is the better. It is advisable to start writing long content at the earlier stage.

Always keep your content greater than 600 words. There is no limit to the length of words. Just correct all
grammatical errors

4) The Visual attraction

Any relevant images, videos, graphics and so on, that are relevant to the post topic should be added to post. This is important to note.

The use
of licensed images is prohibited. So, you either create your own images or to use images online, just google "images. google. com",
1) Select settings on the page
2) then click on advanced search
3) Under usage rights, Select free to use, share or modify.

5) Get some traffic

This is an important step, it is one to write and it’s another thing to get people to read what you have written. Getting social is an important priority, sharing your content to family and friends is the easiest step. Then try to build a community on facebook, twitter, google plus, pinterest, stumbleupon etc.

Most success bloggers use
mailing list to build their audience. With this means, you will be able to send messages to your audience as appropriate, you can very well include a business card, link to your blog post, a monthly or weekly giveaway, invitations to join a club or a social media community to get constant traffic.

You can use mailchimp or any other mailing services providers to build an opt in form on your blog.

6) Connect with influencers

The fastest way to get noticed online is by getting the attention of influential or popular bloggers in your niche. You can reach out to them on their social media platform. Also, you can offer to write guest posts for them to. In doing this you will be allowed to add a link back to your own blog.

7) Have a content strategy

For every post you write, try as much as possible have a content strategy. And writing at least 2-3 times a week helps you to establish some amount of trust with your readers.

Learn to always get fresh contents.

8) Protect yourself against any security treat

This is an important point to consider. The online life is a tricky one. It is filled with hackers.

Nobody is really safe at the end of the day, but it is your responsibility to protect what you have spent time and effort to build.

There are lots of places online that offer paid security service. For a wordpress site, you may not have to worry, but you will pay a ton to acquire a custom domain.

This point is mostly practiced by bloggers already making money from their blog.

It shouldn't be the case, protecting your blog at the onset shows some level of dedication.

Remember to always back up you theme, images and blog posts especially off line for safe keeping.

9) know your Competitors

Keep track of your Competitors at the initial stage as well use Semrush. This is because whatever content you have planned to write on has been written by someone else before.

Google "your niche + sites" to find Competitors.

Then use an
online keywords or backlinks checker, to know where your competitors are getting their traffic from and what keywords they are using. Use this information strategically to stay ahead of competitors at all times.

10) Keep reading and learning everyday

There is so much you would learn about SEO, content promotion, monetizing and so on.

There are so much more you are bound to learn as time goes on, especially in your field of expertise. The right knowledge is key to a successful blogging career.

Always continue to read more and learn.

Questions you should ask yourself
  • Why do I want to start a blog?
  • Are you good at writing?
  • Do I have the time to manage a blog?
  • What niche do I  want to focus on?
  • Do I have all the relevant information necessary to start a blog?
  • what is my target audience?
  • would my website provide relevant and useful information?

Okay after your have answered these questions, the next step is the visualize how you would want you site to look like.

Then write 50-100 content topics that you would develop as time goes on.

Conclusion

Starting a blog is very easy, but properly managing one is the hard part. If you thought this article was helpful, please comment below.

  2. Nice post Yaya. I think you've covered the topic nicely and that this could help a lot of new bloggers. I'm glad you mentioned branding as this is something that many bloggers neglect. Your blog needs to be different and if you don't put your mark, it will just look like any other blog around and will soon be drowned among thousands of others.

  3. Great tips! I am a new blogger and one of my issues is in focusing on what I need to do when. It seems like there is so much involved to grow into a full-fledged blogger with all of the social media aspects, affiliate links, etc, that a step-by-step plan seems to be a good approach. Your list helps with that.
