SEO Basics: On-page optimisation for better ranking in 2019

Onpage Seo

Do you want higher rankings, successful internet marketing campaigns? Then consider using On-page SEO.

In my earlier post, I discussed some basic SEO techniques that you can easily practise.

Today I will be going a little indebt on how best to optimise your website using one of the most important processes - On-page SEO.

SEO has a lot to do with optimising your website for search engines and not for humans. So, it is important, if you want your website to appear more in search results.

Proper optimisation increases your overall chances of success.

I have already discussed what SEO is all about.

Two major factors to consider in SEO

  • Off-page SEO
  • On-page SEO

However, today’s article I will just focus on explaining on-page optimisation techniques.

Now, what is On-page SEO?

This is the process of properly and effectively optimising each and every web page on your website in order to rank higher in the search engine results pages (SERPS). It is concerned with optimising titles, images, descriptions, links and general content of your web pages.

Why do you need On-page SEO?

To increase visibility and boost organic traffic, of course.

It helps promote SEO optimised articles on your site. Therefore, making the process very necessary and valuable.

How to rank among the first pages of google search engine.

Aim of On-page optimisation

When the articles of your web pages are optimised the clever way, search engines can easily find the target keywords of your site and suggest them to targeted visitors.

On-page Optimisation techniques for your website can increase rankings significantly.

  • Write share-worthy contents

People  are more prone to share something that was useful and helpful to them. That is why it is advisable to write useful, interesting and engaging contents. Your audience will love this and be more tempted to share it.

The key is valuable content.

  • URL structure

Ensure you use SEO- Friendly URLs at all times. The first  3 words in your URL carries the most weight.

Avoid URLs like:

Remove all linking words (to be, is, your), ensure your URL structure is as clean as possible. Include only keywords and keep it short. Links like that are search engine friendly.

  • Post Title Tag

This is one the most important factors to consider. All pages and posts must include a unique and distinct title. Your post title should include the keyword for that page, so search engines can pick up such keywords and show it to targeted users.

For example, perhaps you have just written a post about updated interview questions for job seekers.

Your post title can the include the following;

  • “Ways to master interview questions 2017”
  • “How to effectively answer interview questions the modern way”
  • “The ultimate guide to pass a difficult interview”
  • “Tricks on how best to answer interview questions and get the job – 2017”

Carry out proper keyword research to find the appropriate keywords with low competition and high search volume.

  • Post description

Each and every post on your site must include a unique and straight-to-the-point meta descriptions.

Once again, you are required to add relevant keywords to your post descriptions.

The description for every post must make sense, a summary of the content written and free from keyword spam.

It's safer for you to add keywords in the first 100-200 words of you post description.

  • Heading tag formatting

The body of your content should include headings such as; main heading, sub heading, minor heading and so on. It’s the same thing like adding heading tags like, H1, H2,H3,H4,H5,H6 tags. It is an optimisation technique that helps search engines understand our content better.

After writing a post, you should ensure it is easily readable for search engines and humans.

Therefore, it is important to properly highlight different parts of your posts using bold, italics, underline and most importantly heading tags.

H1 Tags: Include these for the main page and title. After that, You don’t need to add these tags anywhere else on your website. One is enough.

H2, H3 Tags: Include these for subheadings of that H1. It is useful in dividing content into different parts.

H4 Tags: Include these mostly in areas that includes keywords you don’t want to rank for, like your sidebar and footer headers.

H5, H6 Tags: You can use these for the least important headings and especially if your text count is longer than 1000.

This is just a brief understanding of what these heading tags indicate. Remember, not to use too many H2 and H3 tags. It’s not good for SEO and search engine algorithms do not like that.

  • Post word count

These days your content has a higher tendency of ranking better when it’s long and detailed. Posts that are fewer and shorter in length, have a hard time performing well on search engines.

Keeping the content of your helpful information-based site to at least 600 words, should be the goal when writing contents. Some topics naturally do not have to be 1000 words before it’s considered useful.

The key to writing long and informative content is research, inquiry, and some more research.

If you have enough information, you won’t even realise when you get to a 500 words count.

There are no official statements from search engines about word count per page.

If you make random searches, you will find out that the first page of your search results will contain posts of between 600-2000 word count pages. There is no limit to how long your content should be, don’t just over do it so you won’t end up writing a book for a blog post.

For instance, the article you are reading presently is over 1000 words. Be informative and write for your audience with the aim of giving them the very best quality content.

  • Image Optimisations

Did know you can get traffic to your website through your images?

Images are good visual attractions. It has to be properly optimised to drive traffic from image searches and image bookmarking sites.

All images on your website must include a “Title text” and “Alt text”, and relevant keywords as they relate to the images.

Other things you can do is compress your images. My favourite tool for this will be

Why do you need to compress images before you add them on your website?

  • To speed up your site by reducing loading time.
  • To increase your alexa and google rank.
  • To increase engagements of users.

Note: More engagements = higher ranking.

Even after all these, the more the images you have the slower your website, so only add images important and useful to posts.

  • Internal linking

I have talked about internal linking and how it can boost SEO.

The truth is, interlinking related blog posts on your site will increase the average time readers spend on your website.

Let me highlight some things to do and not to do when it comes to interlinking.

Things to do

  • Use a keyword as the anchor text.
  • Interlink related posts only.
  • Keep the number of interlinks between 30-100 with respect to post length.

Things not to do

  • Don’t overdo it.
  • Don’t add links do anchor texts such as “click me”,“check this out” and so on.
  • Don’t add interlinks until it’s relevant and necessary.

  • External linking

Linking to other reputable sites or sites that potentially add value to your content is good for on-page optimization.

The sites you Link to will reflect back on you, that is why linking to authority sites is best.

Bonus tips

  • Boost sites speed
  • Add inline or floating social sharing buttons on your website.
  • Having videos, audios, and images on your site, helps to reduce bounce rate.
  • Have a responsive and seo friendly theme.
  • Include related posts after each posts to increase average time on site.
  • Use long tail keywords
  • Add a call-to-action at the end of every posts.

That’s it

Finally, strive to make all your blog post content SEO optimised, keyword targeted and just about ready to boost traffic.

So, these tips mentioned above for on-page SEO will help you have better rankings on search engines.

Never attempt to trick search engines. Just focus on providing article-optimised and engaging contents that will be interesting and helpful to your audience.
